Welcome to the new school year!
Our students and schools continue to excel with a strong focus on our district priorities --reading, math and supports at all levels, and the added focus on career and technical education at the secondary level.
We know our students excel best when they are at school and have great attendance habits. Please help us by having your child attend school daily unless they are ill.
The research affirms attending school every day possible:
- helps kids stay on track and maintain momentum,
- promotes student learning and increases chances of graduation,
- helps kids feel better about school and themselves,
- improves mental health through socializing, developing friendships, building empathy and forming lasting relationships with peers; and
- allows for a learning experience focused on each child’s needs to keep students from falling behind.
The research also shows when families and schools have strong relationships, children are more likely to stay in school, graduate and do well academically and socially. Two Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Ready Graduate are for our students to be Academically Prepared and Persistent and Adaptable. Coming to school every day sets them up for success!
To this end, we promise to communicate often and provide supports with on-going touch points throughout the year.
You should expect to receive an Absence Warning Notification from us whenever your child reaches three unexcused absences within a four-week period. Should absences persist, you will receive additional notifications. This way, you will know if your child’s absences are becoming excessive and adjustments are needed, or if a conference with school administrators is required. Under Texas law, excessive absences could impact your child’s promotion to the next grade level and could result in truancy charges and/or potential fines
You should expect to receive an Excessive Excused Absence Notification from us whenever your child reaches five or more excused absences.
Always reach out to your child’s campus should there be extenuating circumstances preventing them from being at school, so we can work with your family.
While keeping your children on track for success is paramount, their daily attendance also helps the district’s bottom line. As you know, our elected officials in Austin failed to provide new funding for public schools during the 88th Legislative Session. Because SBISD’s funding is directly tied to student attendance, every day your children are in school matters. Increasing our district attendance rate by just one percentage point would increase our revenues by $2 million. These funds are more critical than ever to help us sustain student programming considering no new funding is yet forthcoming from the State.
Thank you for partnering with us to prepare, educate and inspire Every Child in SBISD.
