Safety Travel Tips
- Walkers: Use sidewalks where available, walk facing traffic if no sidewalk is present, and cross streets at designated crosswalks. Emphasize stopping, looking both ways, and making eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Bike Riders: Ride on the right side of the road in single file and come to a complete stop before crossing streets. Ensure your child wears a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing. Practice the bike route to reinforce safety habits.
- Bus Riders: Show your child how to get on and off the bus safely and teach them to stand at least 6 feet from the curb. If they need to cross the street, they should walk ahead of the bus where both they and the driver can see each other clearly.
- Drivers: Stay alert, follow school zone speed limits, and adhere to drop-off procedures. Avoid distractions, make eye contact with children crossing the street, and never pass a bus that is loading or unloading passengers. Remember, the area around a school bus is particularly dangerous.
General Safety Tips
- Backpacks: Choose a backpack with ergonomic features, ensure your child uses both straps, and avoid overloading. Regularly check your child’s backpack to ensure it does not contain prohibited items and is not too heavy.
- Playgrounds and Sports: Have children leave necklaces and jackets with drawstrings at home to prevent strangulation hazards. While minor bumps are common in sports, any head injuries should be evaluated promptly.

Gun Safety Reminders
As part of our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, we want to remind you of the critical importance of securing any weapons in your home, especially firearms, away from children.
Children are naturally curious, and even if they have been taught about the dangers of weapons, accidents can still happen. The safest way to prevent these tragic incidents is to ensure that all firearms and other dangerous items are stored securely. This means using a gun safe, lockbox, or other secure storage solutions that are inaccessible to children. Ammunition should also be stored separately from the weapon.
By taking these precautions, you not only protect your children but also contribute to the overall safety of our community and our District.
Thank you for your cooperation and support. Have a great back-to-school season. |
